Kumiko collection
Kumiko is a centuries old Japanese craft using individual hand-cut pieces of wood to form geometric patterns in shoji screens. We most often employ the asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) pattern in our furniture. In door panels, the kumiko is backed with crinkled Japanese momigami paper. In table tops, there is a glass insert on top of the kumiko.

This sideboard is built from solid cherry and inspired by Shaker and Japanese designs. The upper case is constructed with hand-cut dovetail joinery which is visible from the sides as evidence of heirloom construction and skilled craftsmanship. The base features gracefully tapered legs which is a classic Shaker design element. The highlight of the piece is the two sliding door panels which feature the asa-no-ha kumiko design. This traditional Japanese lattice pattern represents a hemp leaf pattern which symbolizes health, resilience and prosperity in traditional Japanese culture. The kumiko is constructed by cutting individual pieces of basswood with a chisel to create the geometric pattern. The kumiko is backed with black momigami paper to highlight the form. The doors slide in front of three drawers made of maple sides, back and bottom and constructed with hand-cut dovetail joinery. The piece is finished with hand-rubbed oil varnish and wax.

Shaker meets shoji! This piece has classic Shaker design elements such as the use of solid cherry and tapered legs. The legs splay out at two degrees and the aprons under the top have a gentle curve to soften the angles and give it a more modern feel. The mitered frame of the top surrounds seven iterations of the asa-no-ha kumiko pattern in basswood with a glass insert. Available in walnut and cherry with or without shelf.

This panel features 24 figures of the asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) panel. Four large patterns are in the center and twenty bordering it. The piece is composed of 702 pieces of basswood, each with four angles cut by hand, for a total of 2808 cuts with a very sharp chisel. The kumiko is backed with crinkled Japanese paper and framed with walnut.
Kumiko Lamp
This lamp features four panels of the kikko-nishiki (tortoise shell) kumiko pattern. The panels are backed with shoji paper which allows for a soft glow from the light bulb. The frame is made of walnut joined with mortise and tenon joints.
