marquetry furniture

Marquetry is a technique used to create imagery of natural forms in wood veneer. Although the ancient art form can be traced back to the Egyptians, marquetry reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used primarily to decorate furniture. All of our marquetry designs begin with inspiration from images of various flowers and trees found in our local area. After an original sketch is drawn by hand, we use various wood veneers of different colors and textures to create the image of the sketch. Each piece of veneer is thoughtfully selected and placed with consideration of the grain direction. Once the veneers are stacked together in a packet, the image is cut on a scroll saw to create individual pieces of veneer. Each piece is then shaded with hot sand to create depth in the image and placed together, much like a puzzle, to create the final image. Once the veneer is assembled, we incorporate the piece into tables, cabinets, mirrors and decorative boxes.
